“If everyone has a right to life, liberty and personal security, what responsibilities do others have to protect those rights?”

This is the 17th year for the human rights essay contest sponsored by the St. Louis Coalition for Human Rights. Each year the planning committee selects an essay theme based upon the issues of the day and connects it with one of the 30 articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

The essay contest encourages young people to use a human rights lens as a tool to express themselves about issues that impact them. This year’s theme takes into account the feelings of young people on the Trayvon Martin shooting and the not guilt verdict. There are some helpful questions to assist students in thinking about the topic.

So go! Write! The deadline to get your essay in is October 31, 2013. Did we mention there are cash prizes for winners??!!
