The first field trip of the Summer Ma’at Youth Program was to the annual Mary Meachum Celebration. If you haven’t heard about Sister Meachum, here’s a little about her. She fought against slavery and was a leader in the Underground Railroad.  She and her husband, John, had a school for black people on a floating steamboat on the Mississippi River because it was illegal to educate African Americans in Missouri.

This is the 15th year since the Meachum Freedom Crossing was dedicated by the National Parks Service. We appreciate elders such as Angela DaSilva and others for keeping this history alive.
