Kwanzaa was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a non-religious holiday to celebrate family, community and culture. It is celebrated from 26 December thru 1 January, a day for each Kwanzaa Principle. These principles are uplifted during Kwanzaa but they are part of a value system that is practiced daily. The name comes from the Swahili phrase “matunda ya kwanza” which means “first fruits” in English. Kwanzaa is a celebration of the successes of the year (the harvest) and recommitment to the advancement of humanity in the New Year.
